Joana Ferrer, MD, PhD graduated from the University of Barcelona School of Medicine. She completed her General Surgery Residency Program at the Hospital Clinic Barcelona. After this, she obtained a course award related to “Liver regeneration in living donor liver transplant”.

In 2005, she presented her Doctoral thesis: “Living donor liver transplant. Overall risk and consequences of right hepatectomy in the donor” with Cum Laude honors. Dr. Ferrer worked as collaborating physician at the Liver and Transplant Unit at Hospital Clinic, and specialized in emergency care in General and Digestive Surgery.

Dr. Ferrer works as a consultor in the Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic surgery department and Liver and Pancreas Transplant Unit, Hospital Clínic, and is a member of BCLC group and IDIBAPS.

In her observership at the University of Minnesota Department of Surgery under the supervision of Dr. Sutherland, she was engaged in pancreas transplant clinical research. She also worked under the supervision of Drs. Hering and Papas in the Schulze Diabetes Institute at the University of Minnesota from 2007-2009, resulting in peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Ferrer is also a co-inventor on a patent application.

Dr. Ferrer reviews various journals (British Journal of Surgery, Cirugía Española, Gastroenterología y Hepatología, Liver International, Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Diseases International, Endocrinología y Nutrición, Transplantation, and American Journal of Transplantation).

Dr. Ferrer is an editor for “Cirugía Española” Journal. She is also a Board member of “Societat Catalana de Trasplantament (SCT)”, Transplant Section of “Asociación Española de Cirujanos (AEC)”, and “The European Pancreas and Islet Transplant Association (EPITA)”.
